Coombs Outdoors “Ositos” (little bears) – The After School Nordic Program

Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, Coombs kids head to Trail Creek Ranch or Colter Elementary to learn the basics of Nordic skiing. The Ositos (Little Bears), are what we call our small but mighty team of Nordic skiers, with 18 elementary school kids in this afterschool program. So far, kids have spent the evenings getting comfortable walking around on cross-country skis, with plenty of games interspersed between drills. It’s a combination of learning and adventure skiing, and no one can resist trying the small jumps along the way!

“This is now the third season in a row that I’ve gotten to work with this group of kids, and it’s been impressive to watch them grow with each other and with different outdoor activities,” says Molly Watters, Coombs Program Coordinator. “They’ve gotten more confident cross country skiing in just this winter alone, and have grown at other things too like making friends, listening, helping each other, being patient, and staying positive (even when it’s snowing or they’re hungry or they fall on their face)!”We love being able to offer a Nordic program for our participants since it’s an accessible way to get outside during the week and in the evenings without needing a lift ticket or extra gear. Check out some of the highlights below!

This program is made possible through our partnership with the Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Club.

Trail Creek Nordic

Last Updated: 2/18

Happily Munching on Aspens!
This pair has been hanging around for a while and today they were close enough to the trail to get a good look.  Momma moose is wearing tag number 26 and she and her calf both appeared to be very content browsing the aspen patch on the way to Skyview Stadium.

Today’s grooming was a Ginzu Groomer mixed bag.  The close field received multiple skate passes with fresh classic tracks while the rest of the trails received multiple skate passes as the classic tracks were quite nice.  Conditions have firmed nicely and skiing should be nice today.

Groomer’s choice for today is the close field

We are in a storm cycle and trails are very soft due to all the new snow. It needs to stop snowing for a couple days and the temperature needs to drop for the trails to firm up. Till then, consider alternative places to ride, like plowed roads, or machine groomed snowmobile trails. Or, go ski powder!

No dogs December 1 – April 15.
