Trip Report: Two Oceans Lake- GTNP

After a super snowy, windy Friday, the clouds parted, the wind died, and Saturday was a perfect  bluebird day to explore one of our favorite GTNP non-groomed, backcountry Nordic trails, Two Oceans Lake.

With snow and wind blowing in the day before, there were virtually no tracks along the normally obvious summer road trail from the parking pullout to the lake. We followed our moving location position to follow the east side of the trail via hnordic.com/trails/two-oceans-emma-matilda-lakes/

The snow was so deep and fresh that without skis, one friend sunk in up to her hips, trying to walk in our ski tracks! She didn’t get but a few steps, and had to crawl off the snow , back to the plowed road.

Breaking trail was smooth but slow going, so we took turns. Amazing how a normally easy 2.5 mile classic BC ski to 2 Oceans lake can be such hard work! We skied this as an out-and-back, using our tracks for an easier return (skipped the Emma Mathilda part of this).

With the sun impact on the snow, the skis occasionally collected huge amounts of snow on the ski bottoms (in spite of rolling wax applied on the trail). Lesson learned: hot wax your skis before getting off the groomed trails!

Gorgeous day out, with Teton views at the start. We loved the “tree mushrooms” and grand expanses of pristine snow. Very few animal tracks, however we carried bear spray just in case.

Wanna Find A Great Trail?

With some grooming operations coming to a close (Grand Teton National Park and Turpin Meadow Ranch) you may be wondering “where do I ski now?” Don’t fret, there are still plenty of great options. Did you know that there are over 100 trails mapped and described on the JH Nordic website trails section?

For example, you could head to Cliff Creek, a lesser known trail in the Gros Ventre & Wyoming Ranges. This is a multi-use, out & back skier tracked trail. The parking area is about 15 miles SE of Hoback Junction, so it will take some effort to get there, however you’ll be rewarded as this section of the Wyoming Range is barely visited in the winter, so you may have the entire valley to yourself.

If you head that way, don’t forget to submit a trip report to JH Nordic for your chance to win some great winter trail prizes!

Her Turn: Diggins Third in First Ever Women’s 50k

“It was a beautiful day to make history,” said Hailey Swirbul.

It was a historic day on the World Cup with the women racing the first ever 50k and 2023 World Champion Jessie Diggins crossed the finish line in third place.

The Holmenkollen 50k is one of the longest running cross country ski races in the world and is known to be one of the most grueling courses on the circuit – and historically, only the men raced this course. This year, it was the women’s turn.

“Today was a victory for women’s skiing and a victory for skiing in general,” said Chad Salmela and former U.S. Cross Country Ski Team and Olympic champion Kikkan Randall said during the live broadcast.

GTNP Spring snow removal operations begin

Winter grooming of the 14-mile section of Teton Park Road between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain parking area ended yesterday, March 10. The road will remain open for winter activities until March 20 when snow removal operations begin.

For safety reasons, visitors may not access the Teton Park Road once snow removal operations are underway. Rotary equipment and plows may be working at any time, and the roadway will be closed to all users until the snow removal operations are completed. Skiers and those on snowshoes using areas adjacent to the roadway are cautioned to avoid the arc of snow blown from the equipment because pieces of ice and gravel may be thrown great distances.

The Teton Park Road is anticipated to be accessible to activities such as cycling, roller skating, skateboarding, roller skiing, walking, jogging and leashed pet walking in early April, depending on weather conditions.

The Teton Park Road is expected to be open to motor vehicles May 1, depending on weather conditions.

Fantastic Finale!

Many thanks to Skinny Skis for organizing the Skinny Skis Season Finale and to all the racers that showed up yesterday at Trail Creek for a glorious day of skiing which wrapped up the local Wydaho Race Series for the 2022-2023 season.  The image right shows possibly a Trail Creek original experience where multiple groups were beginning the race at the same time in different directions?!  You kind of had to be here to figure it all out, but it worked and it was a great day.

Great days are happening in Alaska as well as the Junior National Nordic Championships ramp up this week.  Thanks to Coach Luna for sending the image of Coach Will along with Lena Poduska and Abby Murphy appearing to have a fun time at Birch Hill Nordic Ski Area in Fairbanks; ski really fast JHSC racers this week!

You too can ski fast today at Trail Creek.  Today’s grooming was kind of a hybrid event with most of it happening last night with the Husky.  This morning the “elkier” sections were retouched with the net result being a glorious blue bird day with some really pleasant temps, and pretty much every trail in our network has been groomed.

Groomer’s choice for today is to ski fast in the sunny fields.

We are open daily to the public for skiing. Click here for our current trails grooming and conditions: https://nordic-pulse.com/ski-areas/US/WY/Teton-Pines-Nordic-Center. Shooting Star

Grooming Daily
Last Update: 3/11

Update 3/11: The course received substantial drifting overnight and needs extensive blade work this morning. The interior yellow loop will be finished around 845am and then we’ll begin grooming holes 3-9 on the orange loop with hopes of finishing around this section around 10am. Thanks

We finished the black sand application today (3/8) and will switch back to morning grooming tomorrow (Thursday 3/9). Look for unsettled weather through the weekend, as a warmer winter weather system pushes through with Friday being the most turbulent day bosting high winds, rain, and snow. Calmer conditions should return midday Saturday and Sunday. We’ll continue to do our best each day with grooming… Skiers should be aware that during rain/snow events combined with temperatures around the freeze/thaw range, grooming becomes very difficult as the profile turns gummy/sticky and the snow tends to smear or clump due to it not being pliable from it transitioning in and out of a liquid to solid state. Typically, after a rain/snow event, the trails will groom out better once the wet moisture has had a chance to set up overnight with below freezing temperatures. Keep up with the forecast and enjoy! Reminder no walking, trail running, and snowshoeing. Thanks!

Please help support trail grooming in GTNP by donating to the Grand Teton National Park Foundation. It’s easy and encouraged. All you need to do is visit: GTNPF.org/donate/ and leave the comment “Nordic” in the designation section. There is the opportunity to leave a one time gift or reoccurring monthly donations in any amount.

Sunday Morning: Heading up to work on the skate lane. Should be done by 9:30 new time. Expect conditions to be a rapid repeat of yesterday. Firm, fast & fun! Classic track will be left alone. Really need 2″ of fresh. Much of it looked doable while I was skiing around the track yesterday.

Multiple laps with the weighted drag were needed to smooth out the hard, crusty track. Skating should be good and fast. No classic track is set.

Skate: Set | Classic: Not Set
It’s a beautiful day, get out there and enjoy. Challenging grooming with wind effect. Not able to set a descent classic track without enough new snow still remaining on track. Skating should be firm and fast…watch out for a couple of areas that I wasn’t able to break up and smooth out. Hopefully more snow this week to smooth things out and get a classic track back in. Walking track is still firm but wasn’t able to groom due to walls of snow…starting to get pinched with the plow. Cheers.

Buffed out the skate lane, classic is awesome from Nick and Glenn”s groom yesterday. Also packed the snow machine track on the north side with intent of reminding folks to ride there and stay out of the groom ski tracks. Conditions are super fast, and it’s a gorgeous day out there.

Trail Etiquette: Please keep your dogs leashed in the parking lot and be sure to clean up after them!

Reset skate and classic. Should ski really well, overall. A few places will be soft due to drifting snow. As the days get warmer, please remember to get out early, before things get too soft. You will enjoy it more and the track will hold up better. Enjoy!

No dogs allowed. Please stay on the groomed trails at all times.
