Trip Report: Shadow Mountain

Shadow Mountain is a local’s favorite in Bridger-Teton US National Forest, just east of the GTNP boundary. It can be climbed on BC classic cross country skis, Alpine touring skis, or fat bike (for those with strong legs and lungs). Some of the best views of the entire Teton Range on the way up or down.

We took an absolutely beautiful ski up Shadow Mountain last Sunday. We left the low lying fog behind and entered the sunshine!  Fluffy snow (with a bit of a crust 8 inches down) with fabulous hoarfrost crystals on the top. Tracks along the road were good.

Skinny Skis Cross Country Ski Guide

Trail Creek Nordic

Last Updated: 1/12

Pictures!
You take a completely full Nordic program and some energetic coaches and you are sometimes lucky enough to get some great action shots.  Above was a Lollipopper from yesterday and some of the Teewinots showing how to have some Nordic fun during a pandemic.

Looking back a couple of days, a couple of our racers are tearing around the course during last weekend’s races.  Thanks coaches for the great shots!

You have a great shot for a nice Nordic ski if you make it out to Trail Creek today.  The recent cool stable weather has resulted in firm and pretty fast trails.  Classic tracks are locked in and skiing nicely and most every trail received Pisten Bully skate grooming today.

Look for snow beginning either late in the afternoon or overnight with current forecasts calling for about 3 inches in the next 24 hours.  Our closest Snotel reporting station at Phillips Bench is currently reporting about 80% of normal so a little snow would be good.

Groomer’s choice for today is Armins.

Teton Pines Nordic

Last Updated: 1/6

Sunny days are here for awhile and the skiing will be great! We groom 16km for skate and classic daily. We offer private lessons daily—please call the shop to schedule. We still have a good selection of gloves and hats but have a smaller selection remaining of pants and jackets by Swix and Daehlie.

We have a small selection of skate and classic gear in the shop. Our ski/boot/pole sizes are very limited so please call us before showing up to see if we have what you need!

Daily grooming, wide corduroy skate ski lanes with well defined classic tracks make for excellent ski conditions. Skate and classic cross country ski/ boots/ pole rentals. . If you want to explore Grand Teton NP and the Jackson Hole area on xc skis, we carry the must have xc ski trail guidebook for our region in the shop:

Shooting Star

Friendly reminder to all Nordic participants that the trails are closed daily until 9am. Using the trails prior to this time increases the odds of severe, even fatal injuries, to you or your dog because of the ongoing daily aggressive grooming combined with the very poor visibility of the dusk hours. That being said, the trails continue to ski great and look to stay that way through Tuesday. More inclement weather (rain/wind/snow) is forecasted on Wednesday, which may likely cause for less than ideal conditions during the system.  Next Update will be Thursday 1/14. Enjoy and stay safe on the trails!

Please See the following  Restrictions

  • Dog Loops & All Nordic Skiing Trails OPEN
  • Sled Hill OPEN
  • Classic Tracks SET
  • Snow Shoeing Loop OPEN
  • Casual Walking Not Permitted

Turpin Meadow Ranch

Last Updated: 1/11
No new snow the past few days but the cold temps have really set the tracks up nicely. Fat biking has been the go-to the last couple days, and skate skiing in the afternoon has been good and fast. To help with social distancing and to get you on the trails faster please purchase your trail passes and sign your waivers online in advance (see link below). As always, remember to recreate responsibly. Bring a mask as it is required to enter the lodge. Lunch and dinner are both by reservation only.
